What is Coco’s Echo?

“Is that really my voice?” I ask when I hear recordings of myself. The echoes that come from our mouths can feel so familiar versus the tinny, alien sounds from a speaker. As a writer, my thoughts and private scribblings are just like the sound of my voice in my head: comforting and reliable. However, when I get published online or see my words in print, I tend to feel disconnected from them.

I hope that through the practice of writing a semi-regular newsletter, about the topics that I care deeply about (race, pop culture, film & art, Asian identities, and motherhood), I’ll be able to marry those discordant voices, and thus produce stronger work.

As a subscriber to Coco’s Echo, you’ll find:

  • Essays on mixed-race identity

  • What it’s like to straddle life as a Canadian living in the US

  • Pop culture reflections, from the 90s through modern day

  • Film and music reviews

  • Writing prompts and exercises from workshops

  • Chapter ideas and musings from forthcoming work
